There is no more humbling yet supremely joyful experience for a biologist than to have his presumptuous ideas corrected by a simple fact of nature. His curiosity about how living systems work lures him into following the faintest of clues, and when the trail seems to disappear he builds hypotheses, often one upon another. Hypotheses are really a form of wishful thinking; they evaporate when facts of actual events bring one face-to-face with reality. Yet, without hypotheses and wishful thinking life would be intolerably dull.

6th RULE: No shirts, no shoes.

Give and Take: The Diversity Within

Is it necessary to accept diversity within ourselves before we can expect the acceptance of diversity from others? Is this not the principle behind the give and take; the act of concession for the sake of profit? It is not far fetched to think that many people, vocal and nonvocal, believe that their perspective is the right perspective; but how many people ever consider the alternative that their perspective is wrong?

Trade Deficit

"Jack of all trades, master of none" has found fertile ground in my mind for much of my life. I have a Jack's level of modesty, curiosity, and means. Jack's beat ordinary numerals and sometimes even aces. But in all their conquests of competency, seldom, if ever, do they take the bridge between ontology and, well, ontology. Maybe this is just the life of the Jack; the life of foolishly blowing a new horn, while having the means to conduct a symphony by virtue of one's own existence.
